An Ode to the Bootie

It seems like I've been away much longer than a week. My "Staycation" was a massive success. I cleaned my closet and attempted to straighten out some of my stash while doing multiple loads of laundry, seeing my family and playing with my pups.

In amongst the skeins, balls and surprise needles, appeared a darling baby bootie pattern that Judy Frank had given me sometime ago from her travels. I grabbed a little skein of mint green Cleckheaton and some size 3 dp's and finished up a pair of booties. The best part of the pattern, which by the way, is available on the front counter for everyone, is the story behind it. It was published in Threads magazine (now a sewing magazine) in April of 1989. Christine Bourquin was, at that time 95 years old and asked the magazine to print her pattern so that it could live on with other knitters. Wild Purls now has the booties knit up and a pattern that is living on 20 years later. Note: I did the booties a bit larger than the pattern called for because most babies I know have long skinny feet and the Cleckheaton is perfect with size 3 dp's.

I love older patterns and instructions that direct us to use bigger yarn, bigger needles for a larger outcome.

It's nice to be back in the store and see all the lovely things that happened while I was "Staycationing." BTW, if you've never tried a Staycation, I highly recommend it.
