It just happens. You are gloriously knitting away on your current project and yippee! Almost to the finish......til you look back at your lovely stitches and find a mistake. Oooops, how could that have happened?? And the critical question: how noticeable is it??
To others, it may not be that big of a deal but to me...geez, it's just yelling at me.."lookee here..you forgot to knit these four stitches and now your garter stitch edge has one row of stockinette..teehee". I consult a few others and some say "no big deal" and other say "this bothers you...rip back".
I'm far from a perfectionist, but the second opinion holds me. It does bother me. I rip back, get the project back on the needles and my garter stitch edging is right on target. I sleep better. Life is good.
No lesson here but doggone it...if a mistake bothers YOU, fix it. You'll sleep better.
